Magic on Telly

Every gigging magician always gets the same line: "You should be on the telly, have you seen that Penn and Teller thing? What do you think about 'The Magicians' on telly? I only ask because my whole fucking life revolves around the telly."

I'm sorry but, broadly speaking, I don't think most magic should be on the TV at all. Of course grand illusions and other stage-based material convert really well to screen for those that like that sort of thing, but close-up magic on television is all wrong. You might as well televise massage, then everyone who watches it can believe they have experienced a back rub.

At every gig, I and other jobbing magicians convert people from "Meh, I don't care for magic." (people who think they know what magic is having experienced it through a TV producer's rolling eyes) to "Wow, that is amazing! You're the best magician I've ever seen!" (probably not, just the only one you've ever encountered in real life).

You see, TV takes extremely talented close-up artists and presents them to the TV viewing public in a manner that strips away the very spark of wonder that makes close-up magic the memorable and unique form of entertainment it is. Close-up magic has a profound and personal effect on those that experience it. Light entertainment schedules can never do it justice.

Blackpool 2012

I now have all my tickets for the huge annual Blackpool Magic Convention. I will be spending the four days drinking heavily and asking strangers to show me card tricks. I expect I will also be telling people about my book by shouting "All magicians are wankers!" then secretly loading their pockets with promotional material while they are hitting me.

If you see me, come and say hello. I'm quite friendly, especially if it's your round.

Magicians are funny buggers about celebrities. Some will go to huge lengths for the opportunity to bang through Dr Daley's last trick to an ageing soap star at a charity fundraiser. I was also asked by my barber today if I have performed for any celebrities. The answer is yes I have on occasion, and in almost every case the z-lister in question was a sports star whom I entirely failed to recognise until they were pointed out to me afterwards,. Anyway, not wanting to be entirely left out on my web site, here is a picture and me an my good friends John Cravensnewsround and Esther Rantzen. Let me know if you'd like to see more of my celebrity photos.

New blog

I blame it all on the web server software, I updated it, and broke the site, so I reinstalled a newer version and the old site won't run on it, so I started this one again from scratch *breathes* which shouldn't happen again but it does mean that I have to start my Bollock Blog again which is no great loss and the last one was rubbish anyway.

Oh yes, I hope to be selling the book directly from this site in the next few days.
